![]() Winding shorts are generally the result of a motor that has been overheated repeatedly due to being pushed well beyond its intended limits and once the shorting begins the further overheating cause by the short just accelerates the process further as more and more neighboring windings begin to short with each repeated overheating of the motor resulting in a cascading failure.įor most single-phase motors you will spend more to have them rewound and rebalanced than it would cost to replace the motor outright (especially if you can find a good used motor). However, do take a moment to blow the motor out with compressed air to ensure that it is not overheating due to being clogged with sawdust. I also have a dial indicator but it's not as reliable, honestly, or nearly as quick as the brass monster. If there is a short in the motor windings (as opposed to it overheating from being overworked) then you are better off replacing the motor then spending more money on it.
